Officially: The production of the Harry Potter series has been launched

Warner Bros. Discovery and HBO have officially announced a new adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s book series “Harry Potter” in the form of a TV series. Previously, it was reported that the studio plans to adapt all seven novels in the series, dedicating each season to a different book. The “Fantastic Beasts” series will not be part of the show, and the show will be a “faithful adaptation” of the original source material.

New cast

The central cast of the series will consist of new actors who are not connected to the previous Warner Bros. films of “Harry Potter.” However, stars from the previous adaptations of Rowling’s books, such as Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, may play supporting roles or make cameo appearances in the show.

Producers of the Harry Potter Series project

Rowling serves as an executive producer of the series alongside Neil Blair (“Too Close”) and Ruth Kenley-Letts (“The Cuckoo’s Calling”). David Heyman (“Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood”) is in talks to join them. Currently, the project does not have a showrunner or screenwriter, but HBO is actively searching for someone to fill that role.

When to wait for the premiere of the Harry Potter series

The premiere of the series is expected to take place in 2025 or 2026.

Why wait for a new series

A new “Harry Potter”? It’s no joke. According to rumors, Warner Bros. Discovery Inc. is preparing to make a deal to create a completely new adaptation of the story of the Boy Who Lived. Will it be a radically fresh interpretation or a slightly modified literary source? We will find out when we get a little more information, and for now, we analyze all the pros and cons.

Why wait for a new series
Why wait for a new series

What’s the talk about?

There will be a total of seven seasons of the new “Harry Potter” – one for each book. And here’s the most important thing: Joanne Rowling is also expected to be involved in the project as a producer, so we can hope for the series to stay true to the canon. On the other hand, the writer is also listed as a co-author of the controversial “Cursed Child,” so it’s worth keeping a certain level of skepticism.

So why should we look forward to this show?

  1. A new perspective on an old story

The Harry Potter movies were made relatively long ago – the first one was released in 2001, 23 years ago (all reviews here). They definitely need a modern perspective. For example, Joanne Rowling banned actors who are not from Britain from being hired. The films lacked diversity, and a new adaptation can provide it.

  1. Closure of plot holes

No matter how long a movie may be, it cannot squeeze in all the content from a book – this resulted in many discrepancies and illogical moments in the Harry Potter movies. The wizarding world is so vast and all-encompassing that it requires much more time than two hours to be conveyed. The format of one book equals one season allows for an in-depth portrayal of this world.

  1. Making up for lost opportunities

Do you know who Peeves is? If you haven’t read the books and only watched the movies, you probably haven’t heard of this charismatic (and very annoying) poltergeist. What happened to Percy Weasley, why were Ginny and Harry’s relationship not as bad as portrayed, and what happened at the party for Nearly Headless Nick’s 500th deathday celebration? This list could be endless – and the runtime of a TV series can accommodate all these interesting details that are only known to readers of the books.

Why not to make a series?

  1. There are already movies

Despite the fact that the Harry Potter movies had different directors – some did their work slightly worse than others, and some were much better, for example, Alfonso Cuarón – fans all over the world love the eight parts of the Boy Who Lived. Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint are closely associated with their roles as Harry, Hermione, and Ron, so a new adaptation may provoke the negative reaction of fans. Nevertheless, nothing prevents people from re-watching the movies and not watching the new series. However, comparisons are inevitable.

  1. Everyone is waiting for the story of the Marauders

This is really a sore spot for most Harry Potter fans. We already have an adaptation of the Harry Potter story, and even movies about Newt Scamander. So why hasn’t anyone tackled the Marauder era before? It’s a great opportunity to expand the cinematic universe and let screenwriters’ imagination run wild, but James, Remus, Sirius, and Peter remain heroes with a minimum amount of screen time.

  1. Scandals with Joanne Rowling

Many Harry Potter fans stopped being fans due to the numerous scandals involving the author of the book series. So her participation in the TV series may provoke a sharply negative reaction from fans. On the other hand, the popularity of the recently released game Hogwarts Legacy showed that even negative social media reactions won’t stop fans from consuming new content.

Bloomberg: Warner Bros. and HBO plan to make a TV series on every book of Harry Potter

The executives of Warner Bros. and HBO have started discussions with British author and creator of the Harry Potter book series, J.K. Rowling, about filming a series dedicated to the life of the wizard and his friends, according to Bloomberg.

According to the publication, the CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, David Zaslav, and the head of the HBO division, Casey Bloys, are close to reaching an agreement with the author, but as sources say, the contract has not yet been formalized.

Stills from Harry Potter Max Original Series teaser

It is reported that the upcoming project will consist of seven seasons, each of which will be dedicated to one of J.K. Rowling’s books. The author herself will monitor the plot of the series during filming to ensure that it adheres to the content of the books, but will not be present on set every day as the show’s creator.

In February of this year, British actor Rupert Grint announced his readiness to return to the role of Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter series.

The Harry Potter films are beloved by millions, and opinions on which one is the best may vary among fans. However, many fans and critics consider “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” (2004), directed by Alfonso Cuarón, to be the best of the series.

One of the reasons for this is that Cuarón brought a darker, more atmospheric tone to the film, in contrast to the previous two which had a more bright and cheerful tone. The visual effects and cinematography in this film were also considered more innovative and dynamic compared to the earlier movies. The score by John Williams, which was exceptional in the first two movies, was taken to new heights in this film.

Moreover, the performances by the cast, especially newcomer Gary Oldman as Sirius Black, were widely praised. The film also featured some of the most intense and emotional moments of the series, including the reveal of Peter Pettigrew’s true identity and the heartbreaking backstory of the Marauders.

To sum up, “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” is widely considered the best movie of the series due to its dark and atmospheric tone, innovative visual effects, powerful performances, and emotional storytelling. You can read reviews of this film here.

Movie Review: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Storyline:

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince picks up with Harry returning to Hogwarts for his sixth year of wizarding education. With Voldemort’s return now firmly established, much of the wizarding world is in a state of panic and uncertainty. Dumbledore, who has been absent for much of the previous year, takes Harry under his wing and guides him on a mission to learn more about Voldemort’s past and weaknesses.

Meanwhile, Harry also has to navigate more typical teenage challenges, such as his growing feelings for Ginny Weasley and his friendship with Ron, which is strained due to Ron’s jealousy over Harry being chosen as the new Quidditch captain. Draco Malfoy, who has been given a sinister task by Voldemort, becomes more menacing as the year continues, causing Harry to suspect that the school may be in danger.

Throughout the movie, Dumbledore and Harry journey back in time through a series of memories that they uncover together. They learn about Voldemort’s past and his link with the Half-Blood Prince, the mystery figure whose Potions textbook Harry finds and uses to excel in class. But their journey and even their lives are put in grave danger when they discover that Voldemort may have entrusted a ring with a powerful curse to one of his followers.

The movie concludes with a heart-wrenching scene that sees the death of one of the most beloved characters in the series, leaving Harry and his friends determined more than ever to defeat Voldemort. With the road ahead more uncertain and treacherous than ever, Harry and his allies must face impossible odds to prepare for the ultimate battle against darkness.
